How do Border Collies Control Sheeps?
Border Collies are known for their incredible herding skills, especially with sheep. Their abilities combine natural instinct, training, and a close bond with their handlers.
With herding instincts passed down from wolf ancestors, they guide livestock without chasing or harming them.
Their herding moves follow a sequence: First, the outrun, where they circle behind the flock. Then, the lift, carefully approaching to start movement. Next, the drive, guiding the flock toward the shepherd. Finally, they use “the eye,” an intense gaze that keeps sheep moving in the right direction.
Training begins with basic commands like "down," "stay," "come by" (left), and "away to me" (right) to guide their movements.
A crucial behavior, called flanking, allows the Collie to move around the sheep without scattering them. Proper training enhances their natural skills and ensures safety for both the dog and livestock.
Strong communication with their handler is key for herding, allowing them to interpret cues while controlling the flock.
Together, instinct, training, and communication make Border Collies some of the best herding dogs in the world.
